The Ocean Lies Within Me

The Ocean Lies Within Me

written by: Andrea Walker

The ocean lies within me
it crashes and it soothes
I float around
on the good days
lulled as I am
by it’s too and fro
too and fro
up and down
up and down
tide in
tide out
I undulate and radiate
I am a sunny day
come and lay at my shore
let us bask together
swim in my waters
playfully
lovingly
CAUTION
don’t dive too deep
I have hidden depths
rocky outcrops
that jag my bones
bruise my soul
make me bleed
leave a hole
and I swirl and flail
SOS
send out a lifeboat
the stormy days
red flags
BEWARE OF THE WATER
I have undercurrents
I froth and foam
and all the parts of me
that come adrift
float ferociously to shore
are collected by strangers
to be taken away
as I am left
vacuous and vapid
broken
as the water swirls
round and round
round and round
up and down
up and down
tide in
tide out
the water leaks from every pore
I am submerged
and I thrash around
clinging on
hoping
The ocean lies within me
somedays you can see it
in my eyes
