The Trees Don’t Envy You

The Trees Don’t Envy You

written by: Linda M. Crate

the trees don’t envy you,
even when they are bare
their roots reach further deep
into the soul than yours;

they have a community
more ancient and lasting than yours—

i am not fascinated by
your bitter psalm,
and your song is not one
i wish to remember;

the trees are my friends—

i remember when i was lonely
and sad, they gave me
comfort and sanctuary;

once a crow regally greeted me
into a magical forest full
of the kindest trees
i’ve ever known—

so you may envy the trees
for all their kindness, knowledge,
and roots; but i promise you
they do not envy you.
