The Weight of a Shadow

The Weight of a Shadow

written by: Johnch

In the long, black night of winter
Stands a house ablaze with light
A shelter from the dark, to hide his raping form—
I know him, as he had known me
Though he did not ask.

I have seen him—

Never walk till dawn bleaches the dark
To the edge of his floodlit yard
From there to walk a wandering path
To never touch the shade.

Still I wait for he will err,
Yes he will err, that stumble
That moment when he forgets his caution
to find me waiting in the shadows
To test my swing, my arcing blade
To bring the wait, I hold in the shadows
To show him the wait,
The weight of a shadow.
