Tiny Paper Boats

Tiny Paper Boats

written by: Melissa Lemay

Time feels like tiny paper boats
Sailing through distant fog across the sea –

I reach for you in memories
You are not there, though I see your face.

Dreams, like watching motion
In old home movies, reminisce –

Whether I want them on the surface
Or not.

Though anchored, you are fading
Into the shadows beyond lighthouses –

I wash my face, collect myself
The tiny paper boats have sailed on.

First rays of dawn shimmer on the surface
Of the waves forming and breaking –

They carry silt from land to sea
And back again –

All else disappearing in their wake.
I see your eyes, your smile.

Your hair the strands of sun
Broken up by mingling stardust –

All of us, just paper boats, rustling
Taking on water, or not.

It seems surreal so many of us
Have crossed the boundless oceans –

There are those of us who are
Oceans being formed.

And you, my dear are crafting
tiny paper boats –

When the storms come, with their tears,
We will sail right through.
