Tired of Explaining

Tired of Explaining

written by: Leigh Cuthbert

I’m tired of explaining
why I need space
when others find comfort in crowds.

Tired of adjusting my face
to show what I don’t always feel
so I don’t scare you away.

Tired of nodding,
when my silence means more than your questions.

Tired of carrying
every sound, every light,
like a weight no one sees.

I’m tired—
not because I’m weak,
but because I’m wired
to notice everything.

So if I pause,
if I turn away,
don’t fill the silence.

Sit with it.
Meet me there.

NOTE FROM THE AUTHOR:

This poem comes from a place of quiet frustration and reflection on the often unseen struggles that come with being neurodivergent. The need for space, the burden of sensory overload, and the challenge of meeting others’ expectations can be exhausting. “Tired of Explaining” is my way of expressing the weight of these experiences and the longing for understanding without words. I hope it resonates with those who, like me, find strength in silence and stillness.
