Upon This I Hitched My Dreams

too young and dumb
to know the difference
between love and lust,
a high-school sweetheart
was my ticket out of town;
riding shotgun
in a rusty pick-up truck,
we were going off to college,
he for business, me for nurse;
how naive at age eighteen
to hitch my dreams to a star
destined to explode
in the boundless universe;
turns out college girls
collect desires like keychains,
and straying eyes
often lead to straying hands;
what a fool to think
he was my forever;
dreams dispense into the ether
as soon as one awakes
