Winter Silence
written by: Sandra Jewell
Two horses, one black, one red
They paw through the snow, foraging for bits of grass
It’s 15 degrees F at best, but the sun is shining warm
The fence is old split rail
Very old, in fact, some boards are missing
The black mare turns her head and flattens her ears
She charges the red gelding, whenever he gets too close to her space
He just turns and walks a few steps away
Five deer run across the back field
The pasture buddies raise and lower their heads
Then go back to grazing
A red tailed hawk flies over-head
A gray and white barn cat, carefully walks across the frozen snow
The sky is light blue
With only a few jet streams scarring it
The hay wagon is covered with snow
The tall grasses, alongside the barn, are yellow
Icicles hang from the tips, as they bend and sway
All is quiet, frozen in silence
Waiting
Soon the little barn swallows will come back
The birds will sing their springtime songs
The grass will turn green again
Wait
They will sing again
