Wisdom & the Ego-Filled Fluff
written by: Benjamin J. Sams
A’plenty of avenues drive us to change,
And to take them in stride takes some courage and brains.
It takes action words like love, gratitude, compassion –
Humility and charity always in fashion
More include honesty, patience and peace.
Choosing principles near always means healthy release
From the worry, the lying, the hiding that chains us,
While alternatives, not surprisingly, less than sustain us.
In fact, it’s an old rule, when we think we know stuff,
We stifle ourselves in the name of our fluff –
The ego-filled fluff we keep locked up inside,
Arrogantly justifying reasons for pride.
For those unaware of the danger this brings,
We hurt ourselves and everyone else with these things.
The wisest of all keep their minds open wide
To make space for new, exciting ideas inside.
Now imagine a world inside what is known,
That exists and is real, beyond what is shown,
Where knowledge and ideas, though important, turn cheap
When assumed that they make the bigger picture complete.
Knowledge is just the stuff that propels us toward
The ideas and dreams that make sure we’re not bored.
And to follow our passion with action’s the next part
Toward turning all our actions that follow, to art.
A big piece of these universal laws and equations,
When misunderstood leads to certain abbrasions
Of mind and of spirit, so let’s just be clear:
When dealing with knowledge, we too must face fear.
It’s facing it that thrills us and scares us the most,
But the thing about fear is it’s false and it’s gross.
And when we let what we think we know join with what scares us,
We ourselves become the very thing which impairs us.
But when we take what we think we know and add just a question,
We develop integrity and trust to invest in.
Keep putting to practice all the things we can learn
And then we can start to grow wisdom, in turn.
Now wisdom is not just simple knowledge, but knowing,
And reaching for that is what keeps us all growing
In all sorts of directions, that’s beauty, you see…
The difference in wisdom between you and me.
There’s no telling what, come together, we’d find
When principled, rather than hip to be blind
But these words will remain simple ego-filled stuff
Until we choose to choose wisdom instead of our fluff
