  1. Where, do you hail from?
I grew up in a New York City apartment building located in the Hunts Point neighborhood of the Bronx, a second floor walk-up next to a vacant lot, which was filled with rocks, clover, chicory, rusted screens, and undistinguishable refuse that made my playground both varied and terrifying. On the corner was Kurtz’ grocery store where I bought American cheese ordered in thin or medium slices. Hostess cupcakes, two to a package, tempted me with squiggles of white icing.
  1. What is the greatest thing about the place you call home?

People were the greatest thing about New York City. They came in all sizes, shapes, colors, and sounds, an endless cacophony on crowded subways that exposed me to the breadth and dangers of humanity. But there was the Metropolitan Museum of Art with Egyptian mummies, so silent beneath their wrappings. The Museum of Modern Art with Picasso sculptures. Afternoons discovering great bookstores.

  1. What turns you on creatively?

Language, a thought, a sound that captures me on an afternoon hike, or from my reading. All things science like knowing the oldest readable sentence using the first alphabet was found on an ivory comb from 2700 years ago that had been used to comb out lice. My ongoing question: “Will people learn to tolerate differences of skin color and religion and join together to heal the planet?”

  1. What is your favorite word, and can you use it in a poetic sentence?

Forgiveness leaves claw marks on the locket of my heart until it breathes freedom.

  1. What is your pet peeve?

My pet peeve is being served lukewarm coffee by any establishment, an insult that cannot be repaired by popping a cup into a microwave for 30 seconds that only sends any brew into a careless boil.

  1. What defines Lenore Weiss?

I agree with Alfred Lord Tennyson who says in his poem Ulysses, “I am a part of all that I have met.” But I’d take that further to say I’m defined by people I’ve loved and who’ve loved me, who’ve taught me how to live with a fuller and more open heart.
