Spotlight On Writers
Margaret Karim
- Where, do you hail from?
- What is the greatest thing about the place you call home?
Apart from history, sunshine, and breathtaking views I am in awe of the majestic Rock itself. Outdoors it shadows my every movement and places life in perspective. A daily reminder of the strength in adversity and human fallibility too. No room for Ego under its presence. Underlines that I am a speck in the Universe, that individual existence on earth is short, to value simple pleasures, learn from experiences, and concentrate on blessings.
- What turns you on creatively?
My introspective character causes me to continually ponder and reflect. Recently, during one of these sessions, I realised that my subconscious is permanently alert to observation. Innately tuned to nuances in language, human behaviour, Nature, environment etc. My mind then assimilates and orders random thoughts, and images. It is this process which inspires creativity in all aspects, including poetry.
- What is your favorite word, and can you use it in a poetic sentence?
Sensual is a favourite word in the context of pleasurable to the senses and not limited to sexual appeal. For example, a touch of a sumptuous velvet throw, a piece of music which raises goose pimples, the scent of a rose.
I have used Sensual in the following haiku. In my opinion the most elegant and beautiful of poetry forms.
Emotion stirring,
Awakening of senses,
Sensual delight
- What is your pet peeve?
People who are permanently attached to mobile phones. Leave it switched on at social events and interrupt conversations to check notifications. Those who walk streets, and aisles of shops, board buses, wearing pods and chatting loudly. The many who use 2 for two, and similar, in messages. Seeing toddlers in pushchairs engrossed in screens instead of being stimulated by surroundings and interacting with parents/carers.
- What defines Margaret Karim?
A positive but realistic outlook. Recognising my faults and limitations. Working to minimise the former. Nourishing my strengths. I am grateful for my late remarkable, humble, loving parents who instilled traditional values and empathy for vulnerable humanity. Trying not to judge others by my standards or cause intentional harm. Passion for Nature and the Arts, especially literature. Primarily, doing the best I can in this challenging world.
