Manners Maketh the Man
written by: Philomena Daly
You say it is ‘One forty-five’!
And you don’t look me straight in the face
Is it the time that you speak of
Or a tip for the 1.45 race?!
Is it your weight that you’re telling?
While I search for coins in my purse
Or is it a loan that you’re seeking
For cigarettes, or drinking, or worse?!
Is it…? What is it you’re asking?
It’s really putting me ill at ease
I don’t know what your request is
Enlighten me, do, if you please?
Say the word that I’m waiting to hear
It doesn’t need any degrees
All I want is some common-sense manners
Why can’t you say ‘1.45 please’?!
I know you don’t wish to be rude
But it sure would brighten my day
If shop staff would say ‘Please’ and ‘Thank You’
Lest they drive all their custom away!
