When The Sun Dipped Low

When The Sun Dipped Low

written by: Rose Skelter

The ground still held the heat of the day
While the sky faded with clouds the color of indigo
Two of them leaning against the cold metal
As the ticking of the engine starts to slow
Just the two of them there alone
With salty fried and greasy fingers
And a smile lighting up their faces
But the sky isn’t the only thing she watches
Even though the moon is perfectly silhouetted
She looks instead at him
At the way the moonlight catches on his skin
And the way the glint of the stars adds sparkles to his eyes
Listening to the crinkle of a wrapper
That holds all the things she could not yet say
And even as she sat there silent, he shifted
Just looking at her – not a glance,
But a steady, calming anchor
The light of a street lamp outlines him in a halo
And as she sat there she realised
She no longer wanted to leave this parking lot alone
