Sea Bled Eyes

Sea Bled Eyes

written by: Johnch

The light grows as the slit widens
Letting the day of dull and gloomy
Find its way into the dark hallway.
Painting the shadows of furniture
In low relief, dust held against the wall
Of memories once tucked under rugs
And blankets now stark on the floor
Their faded outline saying as much
As the novel held to his chest
Lying unread as he listens
The soft flap of a letter hitting the floor
The clang of the letter box closing
Not the soft huff of a coffin closing
More the bell tolling, that dreaded
Sound that pulls the alone
“Introibo ad altare dei.”

The disinterested book slaps
Its discard on the floor
Replaced by the letter wafting
A perfume dancing with the dust motes
Watched as he slumps to the chair
Unravelling the letter
Unravelling his despair
To delight in the dancing motes
Watched with his sea bled eyes.
