Her Castle

Her Castle

written by: JS O’Keefe

During the funeral we were all bawling our eyes out, only mom held it together. In the house she was on the top of the proceedings: sandwiches, beer and wine, pastries from Gino’s, CD’s playing slow Irish music. There were somber faces around the table, mostly silent, she still made sure she talked with each person at least once.

After they left, mom went in the master bedroom. As my younger brother and I were cleaning up the tables we heard her sobbing. She is a very strong woman, my brother said. I agreed.

I knew I had to move out.
