Sitting by the Window Waiting for You

Sitting by the Window Waiting for You

written by: Deni Neighbour

I’m sitting here waiting for you, I know what you’re like dad,
You might turn up in weeks, months, maybe a couple of years,
But then I remember, it’s not possible, is it? Realisation sets in,
My heart starts to hurt, and my eyes fill with tears,
Yet I’m still sitting by the window waiting for you.
All those years I loved my daddy, my hero, with your long hair and beard,
And I loved unconditionally whatever went on,
Through arguments, and the break-up, I didn’t take sides,
Because I still adored you as much as our mum,
And I’m still sitting here by the window waiting for you,
And then along came old age, delirium and falls,
Covid, pneumonia, hospital walls,
How I cried at how frail you became,
I have given anything to have you well again,
Often confused, unaware, and restless all night,
And then, there’d be moments of clarity and light,
Chatter and laughter and singing and love,
And I’d praise and pray to God above,
But time moves on, doesn’t it? And sickness returns,
And ravaged bodies cannot fight any more
Just like you dad, how many times did you battle so hard?
In the end, you went through a different door,
Look at me, still sitting by the window waiting for you,
I love you dad, can’t imagine my life without you in it,
Still can’t believe you left me, it broke my heart in two,
It can never be repaired, or put back together dad,
I’ll never stop sitting by the window waiting for you.
