 A Brief Moment of Clarity

While Ice Bathing in the Fjord

written by: Michael Balner

I sink into irresistibly icy, black water of the fjord
and thousands of nails pierce my skin, all at once.
They take my breath away, they make my limbs ache,
but I’m gonna stay here, I need to take a chance.

I find a sanctuary here,
silence,
peace

All disintegrates, but The Self: radiant and clear,
it cuts through the mind’s thick web of numbing spells;
I watch the ice soften, break apart and disappear.

A green smaragd coloured butterfly is released
from its dark silken cocoon where it slept,
and now, for the first time, spreads its wings,
tightly wrapped for entire decades, to this day.

And when it takes off, I am free,
the only thing I’m feeling
is a current pulsing inside me,
the sheer clarity of being.

And as I’m floating, in the ice-cold water,
those brief, serene moments
whisper to me
a promise
of eternity.
