Blinking at Mars

Blinking at Mars

written by: Gerry S. Wojtowicz

Black limbs hanging low,
weighted by fallen snow,
crystalline sparkles from moon glow,
fractal memories of long ago.

Crusted ice groaning on a frozen lake,
faltering footsteps forgotten in its wake,
waspish whispers no time can slake
reverberating until something breaks.

As it is now so it was back then,
television light flickering long into the night again,
scribbles of broken dreams scratched out in pen,
unvoiced regrets counted out in multiples of ten.

Blue smoke curling up to caress the stars,
tired eyes blinking at Mars,
misshapen memories left behind in empty bars,
traces remain like unhealed scars.

Red lights followed across the great divide,
anonymity the best way to hide,
retreating in dread from the approaching tide,
fathomless the intimacy you will not abide.
