Shallow Hearts

the smoke clung to her coat
like mist in an open grave
she kissed her fingertips still smoldering
from the ashes of the love letters she burned
every last remnant of love dead and buried
and as she turned to walk away
all she could hear was her heels click
on the hollow ground and her heart
weeping bitter tears of emptiness
