Milliner By The Lake
written by: James Gabriel

the milliner sat at the small table
writing a letter to her family in Minnesota
asking after her sister’s children
of whom she met only one of the four
she wondered if her handwriting betrayed
a spinster’s disappointment at roads
not traveled
her dark brown eyes gazed out the dirty window
at the wind kicking refuse around the yard
she left the back room of the boarding house
and walked through the city
winter air cooling her skin
she stood at the edge of Lake Michigan
looking at the ice breaking over the
surface of the lake
she remembered a dance and a boy
kissing her behind a barn
his lips grazing her cheek
