two balconies
wood slowly rotting
women, both tired
sweat misted on
their foreheads
men make their way
up the stairs

 heads down
lunch pails
in hand
not looking up
looking home
counting the steps

 a rug
beaten as dust
floats down the hill
to the trolley
car coming up

 past Mrs. Carmichael
calling her children home
and the coffee
klatch pontificating
the coming
heat wave

 past the laundry
still on the line
stationary
as a sentinel
in the afternoon
air
