AN EXPERIENCE

We broke up suddenly.
I looked away
And she was gone.

In my heart
I had already left
When finally I closed the door.
*
Winter fell over the town
Flowers crumpled, leaves descended-
But nothing changed.
*
Flowers had bloomed
In the garden; delight endlessly repeated,
In autumn they dried and died.
*
Although for months I’d packed
My mind in suitcases,
I left suddenly.
*
The raptor hovered
Coldly in the sky-
Diving as the rabbit scurried underground.
*
I broke his heart,
He said, not understanding
He had long before broken mine.
*
The key turned
The locked door
Shut out time; closed memories down.
