- Where, do you hail from?
We moved around a lot when I was a child. I attended eight different schools from K to eighth grade, which is tough for a child, especially in adolescence, trying to find your way, navigate cliques, fit in, make new friends, etc. I spent my high school years in Commack, NY, a small town on Long Island and was happy to go back to Iowa City, IA for college. I then moved to Los Angeles, CA and taught school in the inner city for fifteen years. I spent a summer in the Hamptons in the mid-eighties and have been here in Southampton, NY ever since. I am home.
- What is the greatest thing about the place you call home?
The greatest thing about the east end of Long Island is the spectacular beauty of sea and sand, ocean and bay, villages and farms, inlets, coves, and world famous beaches from Southampton to Montauk. I live on Ale Wife’s Creek in North Sea not far from Conscience Point, where the English first landed in the 1600’s. I can walk out through the tall reeds and see egrets wading in the shallows, ducks paddling by, and boats lined up along the embankments.
- What turns you on creatively?
This incredible environment makes me feel carefree, safe, and secure…my little piece of paradise. I spot fiddler crabs scuttling in beach grass, horseshoe crabs mating in the sand, osprey building their huge stick nests and get inspired by the wonders of nature in a place where conservationists strive to protect this amazing part of the world.
- What is your favorite word, and can you use it in a poetic sentence?
The very word seashore is soothing to my ears.
“Over by the seashore in the sand in the sun wades an old mother egret and her little egret one,” so begins one of my children’s books mimicking the lapping of the sea’s gentle waves.
- What is your pet peeve?
My biggest pet peeve is when people don’t follow through on commitments. I’m sure this is due to the chaos from my childhood. I don’t appreciate people who break promises.
- What defines Dianne Moritz?
I am dedicated and determined. I set goals and work towards reaching them despite critics and detractors. I try to be a good person and live my best life.
