Wild Child

You wild child
The child I dreamed of
The child I prayed for
I thought when you were in the womb
That you were trying to find a way out
You’d kick and stab me
Elbows and feet and knees and head
There wasn’t enough space
You made sure to let me know
I prayed over you to calm you down
But you kept fighting the good fight

You wild child
The child I dreamed of
The child I prayed for
The child who came too soon
Who screamed the moment
The air hit you in the face
You never stopped screaming
Until you were in my arms
You quieted if only for a moment
And then you were hungry
Your scream could be heard everywhere

You wild child
The child I dreamed of
The child I prayed for
The child who never was still
You played like it was your job
You crawled because you always had
Important things to tend to
You began to walk and then run
Because it got you there faster
No slowing you down
The world was waiting for you

You wild child
The child I dreamed of
The child I prayed for
The child who turns everything
Into a song
So much movement
Never able to hold still
Why walk when you can dance
Why sit still when you can explore
I see more of you these days as you race away
Than I do of you returning to me

You wild child
The child I dreamed of
The child I prayed for
You may not need me as much
As you did when you were small
But the sight of you approaching
Brightens my day and makes me smile
My arms are always open for you
To dive into
To take solace in
And know you are loved

You wild child
The child I dreamed of
The child I prayed for
