Spotlight On Writers
Andy Martin

- Where, do you hail from?
- What is the greatest thing about the place you call home?
I live with my wife, our four kids, a dog and two cats. I also like getting outside with the dog each day. There’s a big park not far from our house with lakes and woodlands.
- What turns you on creatively?
I look for inspiration everywhere – music, other writers, people, places. I find locations often give me ideas and they usually feature heavily in my stories. Recently I found a place called The Secret Garden in the forest of a park I go to regularly. Someone set it up in a hidden place and filled it with stones painted with words and pictures. They left it there to spread positive messages to anyone who stumbled across it. I used it in one of my stories and when it got published, I left a paper copy in the Secret Garden for people to find. A few people have seen it and responded and now I’ve incorporated into my latest book – ‘Waiting For Lulu at Wuthering Heights’.
- What is your favorite word, and can you use it in a poetic sentence?
My favourite word is Spanish. Does that count? Chevere (pronounced shevaray). It’s a slang word for ‘great’. I started learning Spanish a few years ago and some Venezuelan friends of mine taught it to me. Can I use it in a poetic sentence?
There’s a place in the literary world that leads the way,
Spillwords is chevere!
- What is your pet peeve?
I try not to let too much get to me but if a person treats someone or a group of people in a way that they wouldn’t want to be treated themselves, that gets to me.
- What defines Andy Martin?
I find this kind of thing difficult. What am I? A boy from a working-class British background who likes art, music, and writing. I have a faith in something bigger than us. I’m a philosophy teacher and am currently training to be a psychotherapist. Maybe when I’ve finished my training, I might be able to define myself a little better. lol
