Justifying You, poetry by Don Knowles at Spillwords.com
Baxter

I said to him
Don’t we have such a glorious affection for each other
He countered by stepping upon my bare foot
You are a god given angel
He debonairly falls asleep on the floor
I put up with his odd sense of humor
A stick
Or a ball
His brutish display of all those teeth
His manic desire to eat what I eat tests my sanity now and again
Yes there’s the slobber
And fur
Whines at the door but all that pails to his
Manliness and grace
Because
In the dark moments of the night
As I breathe serenely in my sleep
You see he watches over me as I dream
I’ll wake in the oddest of hours to see his silhouette
Feel his warm breath
Make out his eyes that see me crisply in the darkness
Pawing at the bed lightly he makes it known
Rest my friend
Rest my trusted friend
Just rest
