By the riverside under the lone vetul tree
I stand for an hour and watch fishermen on boats detangling fishes
from arrayed nets
A few drops of dew fall on me
and I turn sideways, brims of banana leaves look star-studded
My wizened fisherman–hair thinning, whitish bushy eyebrows
and two-day growth of beard, waves me
Ten nets he had cast yesternight
before sun break he is in his work, each fish is a prize
he has defeated many friends
Old limbs, bent back, bowlegged, he spreads smiles and shows his catch,
with two soiled crumpled notes
I snatch his joy of labour and stride back home.
