Sasha Halloway was your usual witch, except for one thing that made her different. When she performed a spell, her body would twitch. Her parents first noticed it when she was learning magic and did a spell. When she spoke the words, her body started to twitch. At first, they thought she was having a seizure, but once the spell worked, it stopped.
They brought her to magical doctors who performed various tests, only to discover it was a quirk that would be with her for the rest of her life. Sasha didn’t seem to mind, as when it happened, she felt ticklish and would giggle. As she got older, it became an issue, as her classmates did everything they could to make her feel like an outcast. She was teased and taunted daily, and as a result, didn’t have any friends.
That’s why at the age of twenty-four, she worked from home, selling her potions, lotions, and what have you online. It was better than being laughed at when she twitched while doing magic.
She was in her workroom creating a few potions for some customers when a knock had her go upstairs. It was her sister, Brenda. “Hey Sash, I thought you could use some company. I even brought periwinkle lavender buns, your favorite.”
Giving her a suspicious look, she let her in. Brenda only showed up when she wanted something, or needed to get out of a situation. Pouring some tea, she placed the buns on a plate. “Want to tell me what you want? Or are you in trouble and I need to bail you out?” Though she was younger, her older sister was the rebel in the family.
Brenda laughed, biting into one of the pastries. “You always could read me like a book. Nothing terrible has happened, I just promised two men a date for the same day and need you to take one off my hands.”
Sasha looked at her as if she were crazy. “What makes you think he would want to date me? I’ve had two dates in all this time and both couldn’t accept my twitch. Can’t you find someone else?”
“No, I can’t. It’s short notice. Please. I promise you’ll have fun. Just don’t do any spells. Come on Sash.” Sighing, she rolled her eyes. “Fine, I’ll do it, but if something happens and I need to do a spell, don’t say I didn’t warn you.” Brenda hugged her, and laughing stood up to go. “Thank you! Okay, be ready tomorrow by eight and come over to my home. You’re the best sister ever.”
Walking out, Sasha wondered if she made the right decision. The last thing she wanted was to be laughed at. She still felt the sting from her school days.
Jordan Caine groaned. Brenda Halloway had called to tell him she was going with someone else to the fair as he asked her first. “Okay, how about the next day then?” Brenda spoke softly. Being popular, she knew how to get a man to do what she wanted. “I would, but won’t be free then. I have an idea. How about a double date? I know someone perfect for you. What do you say?” Angry at first, he almost said no. Then he thought that this would allow him to check out his competition. “Okay, fine. I’ll do it. For you.”
Laughing very sweetly, she said, “Be ready tomorrow at eight and meet me at my place. Bye, Jordan.”
Eight sharp, Sasha was at Brenda’s door. It opened and she saw her sister smile. “You’re here! Come in. Meet your date.” Relief filled her as they walked into the living room. Jordan had gotten there early and she was tired of being alone with him. Jordan heard voices and stood up. He should have known.
Walking in, Sasha saw Jordan Caine and cringed. How could Brenda think she’d want to go on a date with him? All through Magic school, he had teased her about her twitch. He was one of the reasons, she was home-schooled. ‘Great, just great.’ Brenda smiled as they stood there. “Sash, you remember Jordan. It’s been a while so I’m sure you’ll have lots to talk about. Excuse me for a few minutes. Make yourself comfortable.”
She left them staring at each other and Sasha moved to the sofa. Jordan sat on a chair across from her. “So I heard you have your own business. What do you do?” Folding her arms, she said nonchalantly, “I make potions, lotions, and other things. What do you do? Still, harassing innocent people?”
Jordan had to smile. Sasha had gotten feisty. “I teach at the same school we attended, and no, I don’t. If you haven’t noticed, I’m a grown man. I was a silly, self-centered boy then.” His blue eyes twinkled and she found herself speechless. “Cat got your tongue, Sasha?” He chuckled, and she noticed the dimple on his chin. When had he gotten so good-looking? “No, just thinking that you don’t have to give me a pity date. I know you rather be with my sister. If you want, I’ll make some excuse up so you can leave.”
He almost took her up on it but noticed how pretty she was. Her light brown hair was shiny and wavy, and her eyes were golden brown. Her voice was soft and musical, and yet there was a strength there. How did he not see this all those years ago? “No, I think I’ll stay. We can go as friends. How about a truce?”
Holding out his hand, Sasha looked at it. Should she let bygones be bygones and move on? “I won’t bite. I promise.” His smile had her heart beating fast, and she rolled her eyes, taking his hand to shake. “Fine. Truce. We‘ll go together.” Lingering longer when he felt her fingers touch his, he cleared his throat, moving back.
A knock at the door had them both see Brenda running down the stairs. “That must be Bram.” The door opened and a masculine voice was heard. Laughter had them looking at one another. “We should go out there. I want to see Bram.” Sasha saw his face. He liked Brenda. Too bad she wasn’t interested in him or she wouldn’t have pawned him off on her. “Sounds good.”
Bram Redwood was the most eligible bachelor in town. His family were the wealthiest and their magic line started in England centuries ago. Every single female wanted to be his. He was attractive, with white blond hair, and dark green eyes. He smirked, giving Brenda a little peck on the cheek. “Hey babe, ready to go?”
Sasha didn’t like him on sight and saw Brenda nod for her to come forward. Smiling, she took her hand. “This is my sister, Sasha, and you remember Jordan from school.” Bram looked at them and nodded. Didn’t even offer his hand to Jordan. “We better go before the lines get long.”
Jordan watched as Brenda walked out smiling. ‘What does she see in him? He’s a fake and snobbish.’ Sasha saw his face. “Something we can both agree on. I don’t like him either.” Looking into her eyes, he chuckled. “Come on, let’s have some fun.”
On the drive over, Bram talked mostly about himself. Now and then, he’d let Brenda say something only to start talking again. Sasha was getting a headache. Jordan saw her face. “So, Bram. How’s your brother Lars? Heard he’s a big deal and is an assistant to the magistrate of magic.”
Looking in the rearview mirror, Bram’s eyes grew darker, and he frowned. “He’s fine. I’m running my father’s company as he stepped down. We supply anything magic to most of the world. I heard you teach now. That must be a fulfilling job.” He smirked.
“It is. I teach our future witches and wizards not to rely on their arrogance, and to use magic for only good purposes. Principal La Croix suggests I try for the vice principal position next year. Says I’m a natural. I might but I enjoy teaching. So has Lar’s wife given birth yet? That’s number five right? Nice family from what I’ve heard.”
Sasha smiled to herself. Jordan had changed. He was the same person, only now he teased jerks who deserved it. Giving her a wink, she felt her cheeks flush.
The carnival was in full swing. They heard loud music playing, and people screaming on the rides. At the ticket stand, Bram turned to Brenda. “I forgot my wallet. Can you cover this? I promise to pay you back.” Sasha gave him a dirty look. Her sister looked upset but smiled at him. “Of course. No problem.” Jordan knew that was a lie. Bram had plenty of money. His whole family did. He was being cheap.
Opening her purse, Sasha was about to take out her share to hand to Jordan when he shook his head. “Put it away. I’ve got this.” Thanking him, she noticed Brenda’s eyes widen. Taking Sasha’s hand, he smiled. “Shall we go inside?”
Sasha was having a good time. Jordan was fun and refused to take any money. They played some games and he won a stuffed animal, handing it to her. She saw a vendor and walked over to get some cotton candy. About to pay, she heard his voice. “I said, I’m paying. Two please.” Handing her one, she looked down. This was the best date she’d ever had, though she only had two in her entire life. ‘It’s not a date. Stop thinking it is.’ They were just two people who got thrown into a situation and were making the best of it.
Jordan found himself having a good time. Sasha was fun, and the conversation flowed. He felt comfortable with her, and they talked about their jobs. When she won an arcade game, her eyes lit up and she smiled. ‘She is so beautiful, and wonderful. I was stupid to ever tease her.’ They walked around, and she saw her sister sitting on a bench. Bram was talking and she looked miserable. “We should go over.” Jordan was having such a good time, he didn’t even think about Brenda.
“Hi. Have you been on any rides? The cotton candy is delicious.” Brenda, giving daggers to Bram, huffed. “No. We sat here and talked. Or rather Bram talked. I’m tired. Think I’ll go home.” Sasha felt bad. “How about coming with us on the Ferris Wheel?” Eyes lighting up, Brenda nodded. “Bram, do you want to go?” He rolled his eyes. “No, I’ll stay here. It’s a bit boring.”
Jordan was enjoying his time with Sasha. Now Brenda was giving him looks that said she was interested. Getting tickets, he handed them to the man running the ride. When the seat came down, the man said, “Only two people. Sorry. Rules.” Brenda grabbed Jordan’s hand and turned to her. “You don’t mind, do you Sash? We’ll be down soon.”
She saw Jordan give her a look of apology, and she shrugged. He wasn’t supposed to be her date anyway. She was doing a favor for her sister. Then why did she feel hurt?
“I’ll wait over there and take the next ride. Have fun.” Jordan wanted to tell her that he’d rather go with her, but Brenda pulled him into the seat. “Isn’t this cozy?” The ride moved and he sat there, feeling bad. He liked Sasha.
Sasha sat down on a bench feeling sorry for herself. She had started out disliking Jordan for something in the past, but now her feelings were quite different. He had grown up and so had she. Except the twitches remained. “He wouldn’t want me because of that. It would embarrass him. Brenda is better for him. She’s perfect.”
Tears filled her eyes, and she wiped at them. “Having a bad night twitchy?” Looking up, she saw Bram standing there, a smirk on his face. “What?” Sitting down, he sneered. “I know all about you. You’re a freak of nature. A disgrace to the magical community. So how about you do a spell? I could use a good laugh. Your sister has been a dud all night.”
Anger filled her and she stood up, her eyes glowing. “You’re the dud. Bram, you’re an obnoxious, arrogant snob, and you’re cheap. Stay away from my sister.”
Walking away, she felt his hand on her wrist. “Nobody walks away from me. Nobody.” He took out his wand and was aiming it at her. “You need to learn a lesson twitchy.” Fear had her heart beating fast. She knew what needed to be done.
Her eyes sparkled and she mumbled words that had Bram crying out. Minutes later, he was on the floor, groaning in pain as his face was covered in large red pus-filled, pimples. Feeling her body start to tingle she cried out, “Oh, no!” Minutes later her body started to twitch. Her hands moved as her hips shook and it looked to others like she was dancing, only in an awkward, jerky way.
People surrounded her and pointed as her body was out of control. Minutes later, there was a voice calling out. Jordan was standing there with Brenda. Feeling more embarrassed as memories of school filled her head, she didn’t feel the arms going around her at first. “Sasha, look at me.” Looking up, she saw Jordan smiling at her. With kindness, and something more. “I can’t stop it. Once the spell is over it ends.” Jordan saw Bram crying out in pain as the pimples started popping.
“I’m sure he got what he deserved. You’ll tell me what he did later. For now, I want you to look into my eyes. Trust me.” Twitching in his arms, she looked up, seeing them change and swirl. Minutes later, his lips touched her. Time stopped and she fell herself falling. The crowd made noises, but she didn’t hear them. His lips on hers were all that mattered. Closing her eyes, she let herself be swept up in the feeling.
She felt her body stop moving and slowly opened her eyes. Jordan smiled at her. She had stopped twitching. Was the spell finished? Looking at Bram she saw him still groaning and looked at Jordan. “How is this possible? The spell hasn’t ended.”
Stroking her face, he kissed her nose. “My kisses. It seems that we’re perfect for each other. Every time you do a spell and twitch, I’ll kiss you to calm you down. That’s some kind of wonderful magic.” Looking around, she noticed the crowd dispersing and her sister wasn’t anywhere to be found. “What about Brenda? You went with her on the Ferris wheel. She likes you.”
Hugging her, he lifted her chin gently. “I thought I liked her, but it seems fate had someone else in mind for me. She understands. You’re the one I want Sasha. Twitch or no Twitch. Will you be mine?” Smiling up at him she nodded. “So no more friends?” Chuckling, he kissed her lips gently. “Oh we’re friends, but now there’s something more between us. Come on let’s go on the Ferris wheel. We have a lot to talk about.”
They didn’t get to talk much as Jordan kissed her for most of the ride. Sasha fell in love with him that night.
Epilogue
“Sash, we need to hurry up. You can’t miss your sister’s wedding. Come on babe.” Sasha walked out, dressed in lavender, her baby bump showing. “Do I look alright? Not too big?” Jordan smiled at his wife of one year. “You look beautiful. Did you write down the spell to bless them?” Sasha nodded, smiling at her handsome husband, his blue eyes twinkling with love. “I did. Just remember to kiss me right after. I don’t think our little one will like being shaken up.”
For the last year, Jordan and Sasha had worked on her twitching. Now that they were married, it didn’t happen all the time, but the times it did, he knew to kiss her.
Taking her in his arms he gently kissed her, pulling back to smile at her flushed face. “Our little one may be a twitchy witch but who cares? I’ll love her or him as much as I love their mother.” Taking her hand, he kissed it. “Come on twitchy, let’s go. I love you.” Hearing the name now didn’t bother her as love filled his eyes. “Ready when you are.”
