A Noise in the Night on Halloween

A Noise in the Night on Halloween

written by: James Higgins

Trick or Treaters have come & gone
doors are bolted against intrusion

as this dark Halloween night melts
into November, but wait,

what is that noise
that furtive sound,
makes me hold my breath,

listen more closely, tick.
There it is again, not a clock

A clock has a tock, this is
only a tick
maybe every other minute.

Shall I get up, arm myself,
investigate?

Wait, I don’t hear it now,
perhaps it was not a tick

at all, just a drop, a drip

of water in the tub, yes,
that must be it,

good to know since sleep…
is… so… near… TICK!
