An Ordinary Day

An Ordinary Day

written by: Beth Warren

Today I opened my eyes
To the delights around me and to my great surprise
I’m awakened to the busyness of it all and yet ordered too
A peaceful harmony, so blissful to view.

The ducks, swans, and crested pigeons cohabitate with ease
No jostling, no fighting, no trying to please.
The majesty of a pelican, his impressive wingspan
Gangly webbed feet poised as he comes in to land.

A splash, a chirp, a bark, a truck in the distance
A cacophony of sounds that need no assistance.
A family of water dragons so usually shy
Become used to the footsteps of those who pass by.

The old wooden bridge that has seen better days
Gnarled, faded, and worn by the sun’s scorching rays.
The silvery shimmer caressing grey dimpled water
The familiar path I walk with my daughter.

The neat rows of houses encircling the lake
For many their final earthly home they did make.
Some have bountiful gardens, while others austere
All lovingly cared for, no rivalry here.

The walkers with their dogs, nod and smile as they pass
A few amble by slowly, while others stride fast.
Why has it taken me so long to see
The beauty of an ordinary day all around me.

NOTE FROM THE AUTHOR:

How often do we go through the motions of a walk in a glorious setting while our minds are elsewhere? On this ‘ordinary’ day, I silently gave thanks for the beauty around me and simply savoured the moment.
