I’m No Fun
written by: Jackie Chou
I don’t talk about Disneyland,
or malls, or churros,
or sex, or boys,
or escapades.
My adolescence was torn off,
even in my private diary,
just another blank phase
of my life.
While others dated,
experimented with makeup,
I wrote poems in the attic,
on cardboard boxes.
I have no memory
of Santa Claus,
just my mother’s voice
urging me to dance.
There’s no sliver of my days
that meets the meaning
of the word “fun,”
now or in the past.
