Ancestors: Creators of Destiny

 Ancestors: Creators of Destiny

written by: Lois Perch Villemaire

Emigrating across rocky seas
imagined only in dreams
they arrive in a distant place
awkward like ill-fitting clothes

Leaving behind familiar
language, friends, possessions
foundations of their lives
uncertain as brittle bones

Carving out future ambitions
young men search for work
women embrace and protect children
learning to balance with strength

Parents and grandparents like pillars
offer guidance and support
share the gift of fostering growth
from generation to generation
L’dor v’dor

Moving ahead with traditions built
on hopes of those who desired more
Where in the world would we be
if not for those who came before?

NOTE FROM THE AUTHOR:

Ancestors: Creators of Destiny, poetry by Lois Villemaire at Spillwords.com

Inspired by “Ancient Architecture,” exhibited as part of “Nature’s Readymades,” which showcased a collection of Ancient Chinese “scholar’s rocks,” courtesy of The National Bonsai & Penjing Museum, D.C. To me, the stones represent how generations in a family build upon generations.
