Before I Wake Her Up

Before I Wake Her Up

written by: Andrea Damic

@DamicAndrea

before i wake her up, i look at her sleep
her peaceful face framed by chestnut brown curls
her lips, slightly parted make tiny snort noises
i get the urge to squeeze her minuscule concave nose, or
just to kiss it, hard to decide which

my five-minute ritual before i wake her up, to
see those beautiful big eyes smiling back at me, eyes
of innocence that only children have
i hope that they’ll never know of pain and hardship, and
i realize these are wishful thoughts, yet i cling to them

as a mother i’m entitled to dream up a better world for my child
