 Between Survival and Purpose

Before I fall asleep, a virtual checklist of achievements displays before my eyes
Most of the contents in this list belong to worldly affairs
How I walked out of medical school with a degree
when every day the idea of dropping out seemed to bring so much peace
Or how I managed to secure a stable job in the corporate world
when my empathy speaks louder than my efficiency

Perhaps, it is time to renew the contents of this list
Because surviving each day is certainly not an achievement of any sort.
The will to live each day is becoming a luxury in a world
Where innocent children are slaughtered
A person who seeks to make peace is penalized
The gap between what is said and what is understood has been normalized

Claiming a life without purpose brings no consequence
As long as you justify the killing with either cast, creed, or religion
Such humans cannot be placed behind bars
Because prisons are only meant for wrongly incarcerated individuals
I finally tick my most applauding achievement:
To fall asleep when the world disintegrates
