Birkenstock Ingénue

Birkenstock Ingénue

written by: Sterling Warner

Once our phlegmatic voices ceased to shout
throbbing veins relaxed on temples and wrist tops
and we’d gather together at the foot of her
large feather bed, our shaking bodies supported
by embroidered throw cushions and exotic bolster pillows
embracing, mopping foreheads, forgiving one
another our temperamental outburst of accusations,
suspicions, and hurt, shifting from dark corners where
limited light obscured possibilities, locked in a red
tide devoid of oxygen, compromise, and mirth,
opening padlocks to guarded strongbox hearts
resolving misplaced aggression issues sans therapy
shapeshifting occasions, she with unbridled
Birkenstock abandon, I a spellbound repentant
hereafter swayed by ingenuous, ingénue innocence
as make-up sex consummated renewed sacred vows.
