Bittersweet

Returning to your hometown
is bitter-
sweet, for it has moved
on, moved beyond you:
a restaurant is not where it is
supposed to be, your
questionable neighborhood
has grown trendy
and full of condominiums,
the shops you look for no longer
exist, and you think it is the town
that is disappearing, but it has
just moved on,
just as you have,
just as you have.
Jennifer Haertling is a writer of poetry and creative nonfiction. She has a BA in Writing from Valparaiso University and is completing a MFA in Writing from Lindenwood University. She lives in Woodstock IL with her dog Lucy. They both enjoy time under their writing tree in the backyard.
