The Easter Egg Hunt

The Easter Egg Hunt

written by: Nina Taylor

Down to the kitchen old lady did creep
While dog, cat and mouse were still fast asleep.
She opened the door and slipped outside
With an armful of treasures she wanted to hide.
Each carefully wrapped and tied with a bow
“Because it’s Easter,” she said “don’t you all know?
Each little treasure has a special treat
That dog, cat and mouse can safely eat.
I can’t give them chocolate, or sweeties or cake
Because they’ll have a big tummy ache.
But the special eggs will be fine, you’ll see.
Think I’ll hide one under the tree.”
So off she went to find good hiding places
And just couldn’t wait to see their faces
When they found the treasures out in the yard
Thinking she shouldn’t make it too very hard.
With her task complete she went back to the house
And waiting inside were dog, cat and mouse.
“Where have you been?” asked the sleepy cat.
“It can’t have been far as you didn’t take your hat.”
“Aah, little cat, you’ll find out quite soon,
When the sun pops up and says bye-bye to the moon.
Now let’s have some breakfast, then play a game.
Hunting for eggs, but they’re not all the same.
You each have a treat hidden somewhere out there
For an Easter egg hunt, you just have to find where.”
Dog, cat and mouse could hardly wait
And breakfast was left sat on the plate.
“Well let me drink my cup of tea,
Then we’ll go outside and see.”
The sun shone brightly as they ran outside
To find what the old lady had been to hide.
Dog scampered round and found one by the tree
And cat and the mouse ran over to see.
“Wow” said the mouse, “so two left to find.”
And off he ran with cat close behind.
Under the hedge was another egg-treat
“Do you think it’s something to eat?
Just one left to find. Where could it be?
Oh look there’s something in the tree.”
Cat was the best at climbing up high
Onto the tree towards the sky.
“Be careful, cat, don’t fall or slip.
Come down slowly and keep a good grip.”
Safely down cat showed them his prize
While dog and mouse stared with wide eyes.
“Yippee” said the mouse, “we’ve found them all
And this must be mine as it’s ever so small.
That was such a fun way to start the day.
The best game I think we ever did play.”
Tugging at bows they broke into the eggs
In a scrabble of paws and teeth and legs.
And what do you think they found inside?
What special things did old lady hide?
A nice juicy bone, some cheese and a fish
All they needed for a fine Easter dish.
