Off to the Shops

Off to the Shops

written by: Nina Taylor

“I have an idea” said mouse with a smile
“Why don’t we go off to the shops for a while.
We can get all the things the old lady buys
And bring them back home as a lovely surprise.
She’s always so busy with daily chores
Like washing and sweeping and mopping the floors.
So that when she’s finished she can put up her feet
And not have to go trotting down the street.”
“Amazing idea. I’m sure we can do that.”
So off they all went – mouse, dog and cat.
Each had a basket clenched in his mouth
As they walked down the road, heading south.
“The shop is this way” said little brown mouse.
“It’s not really too far from our house.”
Soon they arrived in front of the shop
And skipped up the steps- though mouse did a hop.
So many goodies stacked high on the shelves
So they could choose what to buy all by themselves.
So many treats were there on display
So dog, cat and mouse had a fabulous field day.
“So what shall we get?” pondered the cat.
“Perhaps some of this and a little of that.
And some of these and some of those
Mmm such yummy smells to tempt my nose!”
Each scurried off to different places
Scooting past shoppers with smiles on their faces.
Then suddenly! Such an almighty crash!
And the shopkeeper came as quick as a flash.
“Oh my word! What’s happened here?”
And among all the tins he spied an ear.
Then out popped a nose and whiskers and snout
And four little legs as he fought his way out.
Little brown mouse looked all around
And then saw the tins scattered on the ground.
“Think it’s time to go” he said
And as fast as he could, off he sped.
The dog and the cat were close behind
With thoughts of shopping far from the mind.
Down the steps and back on the street.
“Quick” said the mouse. “A hasty retreat!!”
“Phew” said the mouse when they got to the gate
“Well that little trip nearly sealed my fate!
All I wanted was a tin of rice.
But goodness knows why. It’s not even nice!”
Feeling a bit glum they all went inside
And thought maybe they should go and hide.
But old lady saw them as she put on her hat
“Oh there you are, dog, mouse and cat.
Now try to be good while I go to the store
And don’t make a mess on the nice clean floor.
Trips to the shop can be so unexciting.
Not something you three would find very inviting.”
The old lady made her way out through the door
While dog, cat and mouse rolled around on the floor
With laughter and giggles they just couldn’t stop
Till mouse found a cushion on which he did flop.
“Oh dear” said the mouse “if only she knew
What a kerfuffle we had and how I got in a stew!
So many tins all over the place!
And the funny look on the shopkeeper’s face.
I wonder if he got it all tidied away?
Think we’ve had enough excitement today
Maybe a little play in the sun
And off to the field for a jolly good run.”
