The Story of Pete Panda
written by: Nina Taylor
Pete Panda was the much-loved toy of a child of the 60s. Together they had many adventures (well, he did!) like bungee jumping from her bedroom window, trying to swim in the little fish pond, and learning how to soar through the air. Yes, he lost some limbs and his head a few times, but they were deftly sewn back on – although his facial features suffered a little more (Probably still at the bottom of the fish pond). For years, they were inseparable.
But then his owner grew up and moved away from home, so Pete (along with some other possessions) was stuffed into a bin bag and consigned to her parents’ attic until such time as they passed away and their house had to be cleared.
So Pete (still in his bin bag) was moved to his owner’s house and lived peacefully with the mice, squirrels, and other inhabitants of this ‘new’ attic for a good many years.
Until one day, the house had to be sold, and there was a mad scramble to clear everything.
And lo and behold, Pete was reunited with his owner – the child who cherished him and played with him for such a long time. Aww!!! How sweet.
So what now? Will he be lovingly restored at a toy hospital so that he can be passed on to future generations?
Hmmm, no. He’ll go in the wash and then up into my attic, when it’s sorted, for the next however many years.
Sorry, Pete!!!
