Chilly Night

Chilly Night

The cold bite of the night
Heightened by the perfume of home fires
All is still and calm
All is damp as the day chills into night
A distant freight train rumbles
Its echo soft and pleasant
Tunneling through the darkness
Touching all for a moment
The blackness of night
For once friendly and safe
Becomes the canvas
For a billion stars
Twinkling through the haze
Oh winter’s night
You shine, and shimmer, and sparkle
I thank you for your gift.
