Cut the tree
into a blank page
and I will write
a small poem.
Forgive me
tree and all your
branches and leaves,
and all your roots.
I will channel
your beauty and
strength and do
my best to make
you proud. Please
forgive me for
putting my pen
into your skin.
I will build
a fire with words
and burn the page
in your honor.
Luis, born in Mexico, lives in Southern California and works in the mental health field. His first book of poems, Raw Materials, was published by Pygmy Forest Press.
