Fear’s Grip

Fear’s Grip

written by: Lorna Rhee

Of all the most unexpected things
Meeting you has changed my life
Never before was there a belief
That in an instance
You could feel
Something just right

There were no deep discussions
No picture to look off of
Just an instant connection
Only our souls could speak of

Somehow in the moment
No time or distance was felt
It was like being reunited
With your other half
Your one true self

The one who shares the other half of your heart
Deep within their chest
Slowly getting to know each other
Was thrilling and so differ-ent

There seemed to be
Too much space between
Our feelings and what was said
Instead of simply
Expressing ourselves
We let it gnaw at us instead

As the doubts began to swirl
That stole our happiness
In those moments
We pushed and pulled
Until we felt hope-less

Getting closer and farther away
We did not know the truth
We went our separate ways that fall
Afraid our hearts would lose

Of all the times to not speak up
To not swallow all our pride
We stood there by the ocean shore
Watched our love get taken with the tide

Standing on this shoreline
I look out for you still
Hoping to be your guiding light
Bringing you home to me
But of your own free will

Though we drowned on that day
Two arms reaching out for help
I will never forget the love we shared
Trust I will always be around
