Fifteen Minutes

Fifteen Minutes

written by: Savannah E

School always drains me,
Home often weighs me down,
and I keep asking myself–
where do I belong?

It isn’t in the classrooms,
where grades pile like bricks.
It isn’t in the house,
where silence sharpens at the
edges.

But in my car,
fifteen minutes stretched
between two places I don’t want
to be,
I come alive.

Windows up,
music loud,
the world blurred into motion.
For a little while
I’m not a student,
not a daughter–
just me,
singing with the stereo,
catching glimpses of freedom
in the rearview mirror.
