Passages
First Light

Queue in line to gain a berth,
trunk to be checked.
Dock to gangplank, motion
sway, as feet feel deck.
Sails flap, then crack
as rope strains, gain sea legs.
Then free, as in past as in before.
Kraken below storms above,
bitterness in departure adventure afar
guided by sky chart and star.
Knowledge of floatage never
guarantees safe passage.
Comings and goings
life on the sea,
the price to be
contracted
at a much later fate,
the sailors lament.
