Hedgehog

Hedgehog

written by: Nina Taylor

He slips under the fence with hardly a sound
And trundles about, nose to the ground
Sniffing around to see what’s what
Before heading straight to his little house plot
A cosy space and some food is good
On his nightly dalliance in the neighbourhood
He came last year to this very same place
Then disappeared without a trace
Fearing the worst I felt so very sad
Something had happened, something oh so bad
But I guess he was sleeping the long winter through
Because everyone knows that’s what hedgehogs do
And now he’s back, my heart fills with joy
But I still don’t know if he’s a girl or a boy.
