The first thing people noticed about the barn was that it never fully went dark. Even after midnight, when the pine woods swallowed the last of the county road and the fields turned black as flooded earth, something pale held itself around the structure—a residue, not quite light, as though the dark itself was reluctant to touch it. The tobacco barn stood half a mile behind Pearl Whitaker’s farmhouse in Halifax County, North Carolina. Around it: dead fields, willow trees that had stopped trying, kudzu climbing the wood...
