In The Garden Where We Live

In the garden where we live
I live alone
In the house where we live
I am the only person there
In the bed in which we sleep
I sleep alone
On the sofas where we sit
Watching our favourite programmes on TV
Warmed in winter by the log fire
Even though you are watching and warmed too
Both of us sit alone, are warmed alone
And watch alone.
The house bears the sonorous laughter
Of our marriage, an echo
Emanating from the walls,
Our love the hollowed out space
In every room.
