Laid Bare

Laid Bare

written by: Andrea Walker

As I entered the petrified forest
I grew wary of the path
At every groan, and creak
With every un-nerving crack
The trees tall and menacing
Their branches laid bare
I felt like a trespasser
That I shouldn’t be there
I flinched and jumped
But held myself steady
As something urged me onwards
I was on guard yet always ready
Suddenly from all around
I heard whispers that said
Keep moving forwards
The words repeated in my head
As I’d become accustomed
To the darkness all around
I came to realise with shock
That I was able to stand my ground
I didn’t use my eyes
To give me valuable insight
I was guided by my soul
To do what for me was right
As the trees stood starkly by
I soon began to understand
They weren’t petrified at all
On this god forsaken land
Standing resilient as they did
In every type of weather
They’d merely stopped to regroup
In this protected place together
No more petrified than I
Nor weak but filled with hope
As I reached the edge of the forest
They whispered don’t worry you’ll cope …
