My Pet
written by: Garry James
the years gone by
I have learned to understand
I have learned to give her space
sometimes that I forget, she makes her presence known
fangs open, pouncing upon me to pin me down, overpower me
growls like an animal that she is, insensitive to my feelings
but she forgets, there is an animal in me too
I breathe deep, stare at her unflinching, eyes wide
she quietens, pushing her tail between her legs
seated on my easy chair, eyes shut I pat her
she coils wagging her tail, inconsistently
reluctant to leave me, because somewhere
someone else has occupied her space
content, she lives with me, like kumbkaran*
few days of anxiety, few of joy
I have learnt to pet my pain
* Kumbkaran – a character in Ramayan, an epic mythological story
