New Light

New Light

written by: SR Inciardi

When dawn comes, the new light brightens in steps
without a switch to flood early morning
with the voices of daybreak. It speaks gradually
in one-word sentences to then build upon each one

until light expresses fully what darkness had muffled
and its elegy tells of budding and its patience.
This is its will, its dogged drive to offer its own
prayer even when the darkest days say so much

about what can stay wrong. It comes despite clouds
that say “no” and disrupt the spirit, speaking
windlessly and without emotion about the day ahead.
It comes despite darkness’s intention,

offering reassuring hands on each shoulder
to repeat words that release you
from its grip…echo clarity…dampen despair. The new light
knows how to fill blackness and mute shadows.

The new light takes you by the hand and walks beside you,
not separate but entwined and, with pulsating roots,
permeates your blood to course a subtle river the rain
had fallen into and is carried away by.

The new light keeps in its care what we prayed for
and safeguarded, even if it is only
to reassure and offer choices. New light knows nothing
of time, it sees nothing except what is

illuminated in subtle yellow hues that tint
what it’s fallen upon and leaves
its memorable imprint even after the light itself
has gone to then continue glowing from within.
