No One There
written by: Andromeda A.M.
Out of the corner of my eye
I think I see
eyes on me
though nothing’s there
and I’m alone
yet underneath
my skin and bones
sense something lurks
though nothing’s seen
as prickly pins crawl
up the back of my cord
up my neck
to the top of my head
who’s there? I ask
what’s here? I think
there is no answer
must be nothing
I’m mistaken
and it happens
I hear it
a raspy breath
a scratchy breeze
outside the midnight dreary
inside, a seething
a scraping
haggard breathing
in my ears
a rapid beating
through the whir of a fan
click. click. click.
I set the fan to OFF
still, I hear
a scraping
a frail dark veil
a heartbeat fleeting
